Starting an Online Business – Your Available Time Impacts the Online Business Model You Should Use

Monday, May 24th, 2010

There are many ways to make money online, and it’s important that you look at your own skills, interests, time and available money in the beginning of your online business-building journey. Let’s look at the impact of your available time on starting an online business.

If you are a mom or dad with small children at home and a job, then you know that you have time constraints when you look at the type of online business you can manage successfully. You probably shouldn’t try to create a business that requires you to be at your computer or on the phone with people during a set schedule. You know that when you have kids, your time at home (which is also probably the time you have for your online business) is full of family obligations, important interruptions and other child-related activities.

It’s not only parenting that can make the question of time a critical one for you. Other situations might contribute to a distinct lack of time for your online business activities. You may already have more than one job, and be dreaming of an online business that can allow you to get rid of your extra jobs. But the fact that you work a lot of hours each week still limits your business-building time.

So first, look honestly at your available time. Can you set aside time on a consistent basis, every day or every week. You really will need to work on your business on a regular basis, so if you answered ‘No’ to that question, you might need to reconsider whether an online business is really for you. If you answered ‘Yes’, how much time can you commit each week? The more time you can commit to your business, the more options you have as to what type of business to build.

If you have limited ‘free’ or consistently-available time to build your business, you might want to consider a business where you sell other people’s products at first through affiliate marketing. That gives you the flexibility to do product research, write your articles, place your ads, and do other marketing late on a more flexible timeline: at night, on your lunch break, when your child is napping, or in other stolen moments during the day.

A good thing about affiliate marketing for those with limited time is that the actual order-taking, product fulfillment and customer service issues as handled by someone else. You won’t have to make time every day for these activities; instead you can focus on the marketing side and maximize your available time in starting an online business.
